What the end of the fiscal year means for a team.

Budgets reset. Money not spent by the last day is often gone, so the last month fills with purchases, renewals and contractor work that has to land before the books close.

Targets close. Sales teams push to hit the year's number, finance freezes changes to billing and reporting systems, and engineering is often asked to hold risky releases until the close is done.

Time off can reset. Some companies reset PTO balances on the fiscal year, not January 1, so use-it-or-lose-it days expire then. If that's your company, the last weeks of the fiscal year fill with vacation. See use it or lose it.

It depends on who's counting. The US federal fiscal year ends September 30, most US states end June 30, the UK, Canada, India and Japan end March 31, and Australia ends June 30. Many companies use the calendar year and end December 31.

Why do some companies end their fiscal year on a Saturday?

A 52-53 week year ends on the same weekday every year, like Apple's last Saturday of September, so every quarter has the same number of weeks and compares cleanly with last year.
