PTO in the US, what you actually get.

  • 0

  • 11

  • 11

Federal holidays. Private employers choose which ones they give

The US has no legal minimum for paid vacation, so what you get is up to your employer. Private-sector workers average 11 days after a year on the job and 15 after five years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many companies now put vacation and sick days into one PTO bank, so a cold in March can cost you a beach day in July.

Holidays work the same way. There are 11 federal holidays, but they're only guaranteed for federal workers. Most private employers close for New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many add the day after Thanksgiving, and few give Columbus Day or Veterans Day, so the planner starts with those two switched off. Open Holidays and weekend to match your company's list.

Check your carryover rules before you plan around next year's days. Many employers cap how many days roll over, or use a use-it-or-lose-it policy. A few states, California among them, treat earned vacation as wages: it can't expire, and it has to be paid out when you leave.

Questions

How do I maximize my PTO in 2027?

Spend PTO days on the workdays between a holiday and a weekend, so each one unlocks days you'd have off anyway. The best deals in the US in 2027: New Year long weekend, Jan 1 – 4 (4 days off for 1 PTO day); Thanksgiving week, Nov 20 – 28 (9 days off for 4 PTO days); Christmas & New Year week, Dec 24 – Jan 2 (10 days off for 4 PTO days). The planner above finds every one of these for your allowance and puts them on your calendar.

Do US employers have to give paid vacation?

No. No federal law requires paid vacation or paid holidays. Some states and cities require paid sick leave, and a few, like Maine, Nevada and Illinois, require paid leave you can use for any reason, usually up to a week a year. Everything beyond that comes from your employer's policy.

What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?

It's observed on the nearest weekday: a Saturday holiday moves to the Friday before, and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after. Most private employers follow the same rule. The planner and the holiday table use the observed dates.

Which holidays do most companies give?

Six are close to universal: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, MLK Day and Presidents' Day are common extras. If you get a floating holiday, click the day you'll use it on the calendar and the plan works around it.

What is a bridge day?

A workday stuck between a holiday and a weekend, like the Friday after Thanksgiving. Take it off and one PTO day gets you four days off in a row.

How many days off can I get with 15 PTO days?

In 2027, around the 10 holidays most people in the US get off: 10 PTO days become 34 days off, 15 PTO days become 47 days off, 20 PTO days become 58 days off. The exact number depends on the kind of breaks you pick and the holidays your employer gives.

What if my company's holidays are different?

Open "Holidays and weekend" to switch holidays on or off. Many US companies work Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and many give the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve. Click any workday on the calendar to mark a day you already have off, like a shutdown week.

Is my plan saved anywhere?

Nothing is stored and there's no sign-up. The plan lives in the link in your address bar: bookmark it, or share it and whoever opens it sees the same plan.

Can I plan time off for my whole team?

This planner is for one person's year. If you manage a team, Forgot puts everyone's time off, public holidays and release dates on one calendar, so you see when too many people are out before it's a problem. It's free for 14 days, then a one-time payment.
