What makes a goodbye people remember.
- 01
Say thank you for something real
"Thanks for getting me through my first on-call week" beats "thanks for everything". One specific memory is worth a paragraph of adjectives.
- 02
Keep it about the good parts
A farewell isn't the place for why you're leaving or what should change. People remember the tone of the last message.
- 03
Say who takes over
One line with who picks up your work saves a week of "who do I ask now?" messages after you're gone.
- 04
Leave a way to stay in touch
A personal email or LinkedIn at the end. Work addresses stop working the day after.
For team leads
Someone's leaving? See who covers their work.
Forgot puts everyone's time off, who covers for whom and your release dates on one calendar, so nothing falls through the week someone leaves.
- Send one link and your team adds their days off, no sign-up for them
- Public holidays for every office, so a day off in London doesn't surprise New York
- Who covers whom, right on the bar

Questions
What do you say in a farewell message to coworkers?
Thank them, ideally for something specific, say what you'll miss, mention who's taking over your work, and leave a personal email or LinkedIn so people can keep in touch. Four or five sentences is plenty.
When should I send my goodbye message?
On your last day, in the morning or around lunch, so people have time to reply before you log off. Sending it at 5 pm means you miss the replies.
Should I send a goodbye email or post in Slack?
Both, if your company uses Slack: a post in your team channel for the people you work with every day, and an email for everyone else, like other teams and people who don't live in Slack.
What do I write on a card for a coworker who's leaving?
One or two warm lines and your name: "It won't be the same without you. Thanks for always having my back!" On a group card, short is better than long.
Should I say where I'm going next?
Only if you want to and it's public. "I'm joining Figma" is nice to share; if you'd rather not, "I'm off to a new adventure" is perfectly fine.
Can the whole team sign the card?
Yes. Switch to Card, then add a name and a short note for each person, up to eight. Each signature gets its own pen color, like a real card going round the office. Add their photo and your logo, then download it as a picture to post or print.
Is anything I type saved or sent?
No. The messages are written by hand and filled in in your browser. Your own name and company are remembered on this device so next time is quicker. Names, photos and signatures for the card never leave your browser.
