Only nine holidays are shared by all of Germany. The rest are set by each state: Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg add Epiphany, Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day; most of the north and east add Reformation Day; Berlin adds International Women's Day. Germany has no substitute days. A holiday on a weekend is simply lost, which is why 2027 is a lean year: May 1, October 3 and both Christmas days fall on weekends.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve aren't public holidays, but many offices close or work half a day, and many people take the days between Christmas and New Year as vacation.
