What PI planning is, in one minute.
In the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), a program increment (PI) is a fixed block of usually 8 to 12 weeks in which an Agile Release Train of several teams delivers working software. Most PIs are five two-week iterations: four for development and one innovation and planning (IP) iteration.
PI planning is the event that starts each PI. All the teams on the train meet, usually for two days, to agree the PI objectives, plan their iterations and map dependencies between teams. Because it needs everyone at once, it's the one event where a single person's vacation or a public holiday in one office hurts most.
Pick PI planning dates away from holidays, check each team's own public holidays if the train spans countries, and lock the dates a full PI ahead so people plan their time off around them. For the iterations inside each PI, the sprint calendar 2027 lists working days per iteration.
PI planning needs everyone. Check who's out first.
A release train spans teams and often countries. On a Forgot board each person gets their own holidays, and a milestone like PI planning warns you who's away. This board is live.

Questions
What is PI planning?
PI planning is a SAFe event at the start of each program increment, usually two days, where all the teams on an Agile Release Train plan the next increment together, agree objectives and map dependencies.
How long is a program increment?
Usually 8 to 12 weeks: four development iterations of two weeks plus an innovation and planning (IP) iteration, so 10 weeks is the most common.
How many PIs are in 2027?
With 10-week PIs starting Monday January 4, 2027, six PIs start in the year, the last one on December 20 and running into 2028.
What is the IP iteration?
The last iteration of a PI, for innovation, planning, training, and the inspect and adapt workshop. Teams don't plan feature work into it, so it also absorbs overruns.
Should PI planning avoid holidays?
Yes. PI planning needs everyone, so avoid the days around Thanksgiving, the end of December and each team's own public holidays. The calendar shows the holidays in each iteration.
