Questions
When is the next statutory holiday in Canada?
Thanksgiving, Monday, October 12, 2026. It's statutory in federally regulated workplaces, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Yukon.
How many statutory holidays does Canada have in 2027?
5 are statutory everywhere: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day. The rest depend on the province or territory, so the total runs from 6 (Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia) to 11 (British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon). Federally regulated workplaces get 10.
Is Family Day a statutory holiday everywhere?
No. It's the third Monday in February in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan, with other names in Manitoba (Louis Riel Day), Nova Scotia (Heritage Day) and Prince Edward Island (Islander Day). Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, the territories and federally regulated workplaces don't have it.
Is Boxing Day a statutory holiday in Canada?
Only in Ontario and for federally regulated workplaces. It's an optional general holiday in Alberta; elsewhere employers may give it, but they don't have to.
Is Remembrance Day a statutory holiday?
Federally and in most provinces and territories, yes. It isn't in Ontario or Quebec, and Manitoba and Nova Scotia have their own Remembrance Day rules instead of a regular statutory holiday.
Is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation a statutory holiday?
For federally regulated workplaces, and in British Columbia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. It's optional in Alberta and a regular workday elsewhere unless your employer gives it.
What happens when a statutory holiday falls on a weekend?
It depends on the province. Canada Day moves to July 2 when July 1 is a Sunday, and Quebec's Fête nationale moves to June 25 when June 24 is a Sunday. For other holidays, if the day isn't one you'd normally work, most provinces' rules give you another day off with holiday pay, or holiday pay instead.
